You know that saying that the Holy Spirit is for the white folk while the Holy Ghost is for the black folk, right?
Well, well, I kinda understand it now.
Wait, before you judge and start going all ‘letter by Paul’ on me, hear me out.
If you’re reading this, you probably know I’ve been in this obodo ‘Merica for a while now and in this time, I’ve attended a ‘white’ church.
Yeah, yeah, I know….
My church is a beautiful church with wonderful people. Solid preaching and so much love. I love it!
Well, color me flabber-whelmed when I attended a ‘black’ church a few weeks ago.
Listen, when I tell you the Holy Ghost was right outside waiting for me in the parking lot, believe me!
As I walked in, the choir was on to something!
Now, imagine yourself in the fighting temptations movie kinda church or any church movie that features Queen Latifah, add a little bit of Madea and wow!
One aunty behind me would randomly jump up and shout ‘YES!’ ‘PREACH!’ Like she was responsible for making sure the preacher stayed on track.
She kept shouting out some ‘encouraging’ words to fire the preacher on.
By the second song, the choir Brothas were sweating and sanging so beautifully, you’d think someone had promised to pay their rent.
Meanwhile, I was sitting there acting all Holy Spirit baby. But by the time they got to the 3rd song, I let the Holy Ghost take charge cz whaaaaat?

| This was me at this point. |
All this was even before the preacher came up to preach. That man came ready, y’all!
By this time, the aunty behind me had fully caught the Holy Ghost… she was all Glory! And I was almost right behind her cz OMG!!!
Everyone for sure, for sure caught the Holy Ghost. The choir was on fire, the preacher was on fire, half the congregation was on fire!
There were random prompts of “SAY IT AGAIN PASTOR!’ Abi they think I did not hear it the first time?
One uncle made it his duty to wipe off the sweat on the pastor’s face and he was diligent with that service.
All in all. It was a glorious service and I will definitely be going back for some Holy Ghost experience.
Now, before you begin to look at me funny, I do know that the Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit are One. But what I am saying is this, sometimes you hear Him and sometimes it feels like He is sitting right next to you on the pew.
And I know the whole ish about one being of the white folk and one for the black folk joke comes from cultural differences in worship styles. It really isn’t about who has the Holy Spirit and who has the Holy Ghost - because like I have already said, they are One and the same. Again, like I said, it is more about how different church cultures express their faith.
So yes, again, I know the Holy Spirit and the Holy Ghost are One and the same but after that service, I also understand exactly what that saying means.
So yeah, it is same Jesus, same Holy Spirit, same Holy Ghost, just very different ways of expressing the joy of knowing again and being in His presence.
Shey y’all get?
Selah!
PS:
I’ve had this post in ‘draft’ for a while now, I just could not get myself to edit and post but I think today is the perfect day to post this as I have a date with the Holy Ghost.
Y’all, I am getting baptized today!!
Glorrrryyyyyyy!!!
